How it all started...
Since no early record of the Hillsboro Christian Church is available, little can be said of its early history. However, we do know that the plot or ground where the church stands was conveyed, by deed, to the trustees of the church by Alvin G Day and Priscilla Day, his wife on the 30th day of April 1860. The Trustees at that time were Charles H. Hurst, John Fox, and Jonathan Jones. Alvin G. Day was the material grandfather of Mrs. John M. Hurley (Kate Freeman) who lived here man years and was a faithful member of the church. Her husband, John W. Hurley, was an officer in the church, Sunday school Superintendent and teacher of the Bible class.
The present structure is the original one and was built by a Mr. Shepherd, a brother of the late James Shepherd who lived here many years. In 1911 the building was remodeled. New seats were purchased and the seating was reversed to face south instead of facing the entrance doors. The pulpit was also moved to the opposite, or southern, end of the building. When remodeling was completed a rededication service was held with Brother Lloyd of Flemingsburg Christian Church officiating. At a later date a new floor was laid and electric lights were installed.
The earliest preachers of which there is any record were Brother Tinder, Brother Dan Barksdale, 1859, Reverend William Morrison, 1878, Reverend Wells, 1890. Reverend Thomas B. Howe preached here for a number of years and was a resident of Poplar Plains.
